The Aurora Charter School Board will be electing new members on May 15th and 16th, 2025. The board is looking for six members for election this year. Please consider running for the school board.

  1. 3-Year Parent Seat (Term: July 1, 2025- June 30. 2028)
  2. 3- Years Teacher Seat (Term: July 1, 2025- June 30. 2028)
  3. 3- Years Community Member Seat (Term: July 1, 2025- June 30. 2028)
  4. 1-Year Teacher Seat (Term: July 1, 2025- June 30. 2026)
  5. 2-Years Teacher Seat (Term: July 1, 2025- June 30. 2027)
  6. 2-Years Community Member Seat (Term: July 1, 2025- June 30. 2027)
 
What is the school board?: The school board is the governing body of the school. The board meets once a month to discuss important topics related to the school including the budget, student success, creating and revising the rules and policies of the school. 
 
Who is on the board?: The board includes parents, teachers, and community members. Our goal is to have 3 members from each group to have equal representation. 
 
How long will I be on the school board?: Typically board members serve a 3 year term. 
 
Why should I run?: Being on the school board allows you to learn more about Aurora and propose changes to help achieve Aurora’s mission “to operate a center of learning that embraces academic excellence and celebrates the gift of Latino culture.”
 
When does the school board meet?: The school board meets once a month for a 2-hour meeting to discuss important items regarding the school. Aurora Charter School Board Committees will meet once per month for a 1-hour meeting to complete work related to the specific committee charge.  There will also be mandatory and optional training opportunities throughout the year.

¿Qué es la mesa directiva?: La mesa directiva es la organización de gobierno de la escuela. La mesa se reúne una vez al mes para discutir temas importantes relacionados con la escuela, incluido el presupuesto, el éxito de los estudiantes, la creación y revisión de las reglas y políticas de la escuela.
¿Quién está en la mesa?: La mesa incluye a padres, maestros y miembros de la comunidad. Nuestro objetivo es tener 3 miembros de cada grupo para tener una representación equitativa.

¿Cuándo se reúne la mesa directiva?: La mesa directiva se reúne dos veces al mes. Una reunión de 2 horas para discutir temas importantes relacionados con la escuela. La otra reunión es para capacitar a los miembros de la junta para ayudarlos a comprender su función y responsabilidades.

Policies and procedures related to Aurora Charter School Board elections are outlined in Article III of the board bylaws

ARTICLE III

BOARD OF DIRECTORS GENERAL POWERS, TENURE, QUALIFICATIONS, ELECTIONS AND COMPENSATION. 

Section 1. General Powers. The board of directors also shall decide matters related to the operation of the School, including budgeting, curriculum and operating procedures. 

Section 2. Except as limited by the Articles of Incorporation, these Bylaws, Minn. Stat. §124E, the School’s contract with its authorizer and/or by law, the Board of Directors shall have the general power and authority to do all acts and perform all other functions consistent with the Board members’ fiduciary duties to the School. 

Section 3. Number, and Tenure. The Board of Directors shall be composed of between five (5) and nine (9) members. Thirty days prior to each annual meeting, the Board shall announce the number of Board positions that will be filled for the subsequent academic year. 

Section 4. Requirements and qualifications. 

(a) At least five (5) of the Board members shall be unrelated. 

(b) The Board of Directors shall be divided into three classes, one of teachers, one of parents and one of community members and persons at large selected for expertise. Board members shall serve three year terms, unless they are appointed to fill a vacancy, in which case the term runs through the end of term associated with the seat that was vacated. Terms shall be staggered so that approximately 1/3 of the Board turns over each year. 

  1. A majority of the Board may be teachers of the school. 
  2. No School employee may serve on the Board of Directors unless that employee is a licensed teacher employed at the School. 
  3. The Chief Financial Officer and the Executive Director may only serve as ex officio non- voting members of the School Board of Directors; 

Section 5. Annual Meetings. Annual meetings will take place on the 3rd of Thursday of September each year. At the School Board’s first annual meeting, eligible voters shall elect four (4) directors to a two (2) year term (to be identified as Directors A, B, C, and D) and three (3) directors to a one (1) year term (to be identified as Directors E, F, and G); after the initial Board has served its terms, each director shall hold office for a three (3) year term or until a successor has been duly elected and qualified, or until the director dies, resigns, is removed or the term otherwise expires. New School Board Directors shall be elected during the annual meeting to fill the term of vacancies. No elections may be held on days when the School is closed for holidays or vacations.

Section 6. Notice of Elections at Annual Meetings. The School Board shall notify all eligible voters of the School Board election dates at least 30 days prior to the Annual Meeting. 

Section 7. Eligible voters. Those eligible to vote for the School Board of Directors are as follows: 

(a) Staff members employed at the School; 

(b) Teachers employed at the School; 

(c). All parents or legal guardians of children enrolled in the school. 

Section 8. Nomination Process. Sixty (60) days prior to the School Board's annual meeting, the Board of Directors will solicit nominations for all of the Directorate positions that will be filled at the next annual meeting. The Board of Directors will compile the list of nominees and notify the eligible voters of the nominees for each position thirty (30) days prior to the annual meeting.
